Laureus Sport for Good Global Summit 2023 has ended with a call to increase funding into targeted programming for girls and young women and a pledge to lead global research into gender equity and the role that programmes empowering young women and girls through sport can play in society.

World Triathlon is dedicated to promoting gender equity, diversity and inclusion in triathlon worldwide, at all levels of competition and in all age categories. As the governing body for the sport of triathlon it’s committed to supporting the development of the sport around the world, including female participation, working with its partners to offer a balanced sport development programme, for athletes and coaches, from grassroots to a high-performance level. Vicent Beltran, World Triathlon Development and Education, attended the Summit and was a presenter in a breakout session at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, introducing and discussing the World Triathlon gender equity initiatives including the relevant coaching and education courses.

“The opportunity to represent World Triathlon at the Laureus Sport for Good Global Summit was an enormous honour. I’m delighted that the summit attendees commended and embraced World Triathlon’s gender equity programmes and approach to coaching females, which we’ve been implementing over the past few years.

“I was particularly thrilled to learn about all the worldwide community activities the Foundation has started. There is still a long way to go before gender equity is achieved in sport, but I am certain that World Triathlon goes beyond simply talking the talk,” said Vicent Beltran.

As part of World Triathlon Development and Education programmes, it offers a specific ‘Coaching Female Triathletes’ course. The course is designed to provide direction to coaches who working with female triathletes and need to individualise and tailor-make their training throughout the prescription and implementation of strength and conditioning programs. To support the health and well-being of female athletes, coaches must comprehend female-specific topics such as the menstrual cycle, breast health, female psychology and trends in female injuries, meaning that coaches must be able to train female triathletes differently from males. More information on the course can be found at the World Triathlon Education and Knowledge Hub.

The Laureus Sport for Good Summit produced a coalition of influencers and decision-makers from across the international sport-for-development community, with a common mission: to prioritise the well-being of young women and girls through the power of sport and across all areas of their operations and organisations.

The event saw world-renowned athletes, global leaders from within the sports industry and key decision-makers from international governmental and non-profit organisations meet to share ideas and knowledge around the challenges facing the sport-for-development sector.
