San Remo is ready to go
The next event of the ETU European Triathlon Cup Series will be taking place tomorrow in charming San Remo, Italy.
Perfect weather, a nice ambiance and a legendary course await the athletes, among them some world-class hot shots like the 2002 World Champion Ivan Rana (ESP) and Olympian and local favourite Daniel Fontana (ITA), as well as former World Cup medalist Ana Burgos (ESP), Magali Di Marco-Messmer (SUI), Olympic bronze medalist from Sydney.
The course promises to be a really tough one, especially on the 3 lap bike course which includes the legendary ’Poggio’ hill, the famous last climb of the Milano-San Remo cycling race. Many of the cycling-fanatic italian supporters are to be expected on the uphill sections as well as on the run course along the beautiful promenade of San Remo.
After the sprint distance age-group races in the morning, the huge group of approximately 100 elite male athletes will make their way down to the swim start to head out for the one lap swim in the Mediterranian Sea. Wetsuits will be allowed since the water temperature is only 19 degrees Celsius. They will exit the water at the sandy beach of Hotel Paris and head out on the demanding bike course. Just for your information: after 3 km of relatively flat ride, a 5 km long uphill section with an average elevation of 5 % awaits the athletes – and that’s for 3 times! A real tricky, fast and technical downhill passage completes the course, which ends back in transition in the historic old part of San Remo. 4 laps of flat, but windy run is following before finishing at the race center. The group of 40 elite women starts at 1PM in the afternoon, same conditions apply…
As for the race tactics, a nervous pack and many breakaway efforts can be expected, for some athletes will seek their fortune on earlier stages of the race. Stay tuned for race results, pictures and video to appear shortly on www.etu-triathlon.org.
