Setanta Tri Club organised another successful triathlon in Blackrock, Co. Louth on Sunday. The race supports the Romanian Orphanage Fund - Cross Cause. This is the 2nd year the race has been run, with twice the number competing compared to 2004.
Thomas Elliot,30, an Irish International from the Olympian Tri Club in Belfast was the first home in a time of 56mins 17secs. Thomas led from the start, he was first out of the water and kept his lead on the bike with fellow Ulsterman Thomas Simmons close behind. Elliott put in a good run to hold off Aidan Woods from Dublin who put in the fastest run of the day, passing 6 people to finish second, just 24 secs behind Elliott. Simmons held on for third place.
In the female section, it was young Erin Turkington who took first spot. Erin, just 19 yrs old, still classified as a junior, finished 2mins 20secs ahead of her nearest rivals. Erin, a student in Queens in Belfast had a very good swim, coming out near the top of the field giving herself a nearly 2 min cushion for the bike. She consolidated her lead on the bike leg and ran in home, the comfortable winner at 1.03.59. Tara Nolan form Dublin was second with 2 seconds to spare over Orla Tuohy from Cork. The two girls came out of the water together but Tara put in a better bike leg and held off Orla in the sprint finish on the run.
It was a very enjoyable race made better by the weather and the local support who came out to cheer and clap every competitor home. A lot of competitors and spectators alike stayed around for the post race bar-b-q and prizegiving on the main street in Blackrock. Setanta had a few more sponsors on board this year so as well as the usual category prizes, quite a lot of spot prizes were handed out. so most came away from the day with something, be it a prize, sun-burn or just the feeling of finishing their first triathlon.

VIVE LA FRANCE!

It was an emotional day at Ironman France, where France’s Herve Faure and Holland’s Mariska Kramer won on the brand new Ironman course at Nice that featured the famous French Riviera based swim, a “Tour de France type” bike ride, and the run on the famed Promenade des Anglais.
