Eastern Alps to Test World's Top Long Distance Athletes
The world’s toughest long-distance triathlon is only seven weeks away. 2010 Immenstadt ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships (4k swim, 130k bike and 30k run) is set to take place on 1 August in the vibrant resort area of Immenstadt-Oberstaufen (Allgäu, Germany).
With the location in the rugged Allgäu Alps, the cycling course from Immenstadt to Oberstaufen and back is sure to be one of the most difficult bike courses in the world. On the 130 kilometre ride, athletes will be forced to ride up inclines of up to 18 percent. The bike course has over 2,000 metres of vertical gain.
“Whoever is able to handle this cycle course best will be crowned world champion. In the past we have often seen race favorites overexerting themselves on the bike and thus running out of steam on the last kilometres of the run,” says German Altenried, President of the organising committee.
Since 1983, Immenstadt has been the venue of the world famous Allgau Triathlon. This year, the race will take place during the triathlon weekend in Immenstadt-Oberstaufen on 30 July - one day prior to the Long Distance World Championships.
Triathlon fans from all over the world and the triathlon-crazy population of the Oberallgäu region will provide a perfect setting for the title race. The organisers estimate that on each of the two days about 20,000 to 25,000 visitors will come to cheer on the world’s best athletes with their cowbells, air horns and applause.
