Pontevedra shines once again in sustainability!

Having achieved Gold Certification in Sustainability in 2025 with the 2025 World Triathlon Multisport Championships Pontevedra, this year the 2026 World Triathlon Championship Finals Pontevedra have once again been nominated by World Triathlon for this recognition. A double gold milestone that highlights the work carried out and reaffirms our commitment to organising events that are increasingly responsible, sustainable and respectful of our environment. We are taking on the challenge once again, renewing our commitment and continuing to move forward together towards a more sustainable future.

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY
The 2026 World Triathlon Championship Finals Pontevedra, following the path marked by the last 2025 World Triathlon Multisport Championships Pontevedra, recognized with the Gold Certificate in Sustainability, a sustainability strategy has been designed that integrates:
- Environmental criteria, minimizing negative impacts on climate, water, ecosystems and biodiversity.
- Economic criteria, promoting efficiency for the use of resources, responsible consumption and the reduction of emissions.
- Social criteria, guaranteeing universal accessibility, equal opportunities and
inclusion.
The main objective of this strategy, designed with a two-year horizon, is to prevent these negative impacts, move towards a more sustainable model and align with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.
The sustainability strategy considers every stage of the event:

- Disassembly
The success of this strategy depends on the engagement of all the actors involved in the event, it is therefore a collective commitment in which the following participate:

- Sponsors
- Volunteering
- Public
To ensure a sustainable event, communication plays a key role. Both internal and external  communication are essential to raise awareness and align all participants: staff, collaborating entities and sponsors, athletes, volunteers and the public attending the event.
What are the sustainability objectives of the 2026 World Triathlon Championship Finals Pontevedra?
1. Combat climate change.
2. Reduce the water and ecological footprint.
3. Apply circular economy principles, including: redesign, rethink, reduce, reuse,
repair, restore, repurpose, and recycle.
4. Promote responsible consumption and strengthen the local economy.
5. Promote health and social integration through sport.

During the event water fountains will be available for the being used by:
•    Age Group Athletes.
•    Volunteering.
•    Staff of the organization.
•    Public.
Thanks to the collaboration with the City Council of Pontevedra and VEOLIA, the use of reusable cups of the Multisport Pontevedra 2025, will avoid the generation of several thousand single-use plastic bottles.

To minimize the emissions generated by the event, several sustainable measures will be implemented:
•    Promotion of sustainable mobility.
•    "1B1V" (One Ticket, One Cup) Initiative: In the Expo area, attendees will be able to exchange a public transport ticket dated the days of the event for a reusable cup.
•    Use of efficient vehicles by the organization.
•    Efficient sports facilities: use of renewable energy sources, efficient lighting systems and energy-efficient technologies in the event infrastructure.
•    Availability of collective transport.
In addition, the City Council of Pontevedra will carry out a tree planting once the event is over and the calculation of CO2 emissions generated by the competition has been made, contributing to making these finals of the 2026 World Triathlon Championship Finals Pontevedra a Carbon Neutral Event.

Redesign, rethink, reduce, reuse, repair, restore, readapt, recycle... are key actions to achieve the goal of the circular economy. 
Some of the initiatives we have proposed for these finals of the 2026 World Triathlon Championship Finals Pontevedra include:
•    The reuse of glasses of water in the circuit intended for the different Age Groups.
•    The collection of clothing and sports shoes in the expo area for reuse through social groups, donate the garments you no longer need!
•    The reuse of signage used in other competitions (including the last 2025 World Triathlon Multisport Championships Pontevedra) and the presence of rented.
•    The reuse of the event's blue carpet in other sports competitions.
•    The collection of surplus food in collaboration with soup kitchens.
•    The implementation of a policy to avoid the use of single-use plastic tableware in the catering area, with the aim of becoming a plastic-free event.

As part of the 2026 Pontevedra Triathlon World Championship Finals, we aim to promote the consumption of locally sourced foods and to strengthen collaboration with the local business community.
Sustainable consumption and support for the local economy are key to a more balanced future. By choosing local products, the ecological footprint can be reduced and the growth of small businesses encouraged. This strengthens communities, generates employment and promotes responsible practices. Every conscious purchase is a step towards a fairer and more sustainable world.

The practice of outdoor sports must always be accompanied by actions for the conservation and protection of the environment. In this sense, during the celebration of these finals of the 2026 World Triathlon Championship Finals Pontevedra:
•    We recommend that athletes use sunscreen creams that respect the marine ecosystem.
•    Thanks to the collaboration with Ecoembes, through its LIBERA project, we will carry out an environmental restoration activity in the nearby environment.

These 2026 World Triathlon Championship Finals Pontevedra will be an inclusive and accessible event for people with reduced mobility. Our goal is to make all facilities, courses and key points of the championship usable, safe and comfortable for all people.

The city of Pontevedra has a public equality policy that aims to ensure that women and men can participate equally in all areas of life, including sport (https://igualdade.pontevedra.gal/).
The FETRI, as co-organiser of the 2026 World Triathlon Championship Finals Pontevedra together with the City Council of Pontevedra, also tries to make visible the role of women in sport, for which it annually evaluates the presence of women in all levels that concern us (athletes, organization, oficials, ...). In addition, it has a protocol for the prevention, detection and action against sexual harassment and abuse to achieve safe sports environments.
This policy is implemented during the celebration of the event, with different actions, including:
•    Equal prizes between male and female categories.
•    Equal access to training facilities.
•    Availability of feminine hygiene products.
In the same way, measures are implemented that allow and protect the reconciliation of personal, family and sports life:
•    Breastfeeding areas in different locations:
     o Galician Centre for Sports Technification (CGTD).
     o Sustainability booth in the Expo Zone.
•    Information about daycare services in the city.
The event will also have universal volunteering, made up of people belonging to the local associative entities. 
Different associations will be present in the solidarity corner of the Expo Zone to give visibility to their initiatives.

Cultural diversity is a universal value, and in these finals of the 2026 World Triathlon Championship Finals Pontevedra we want to celebrate it with various initiatives:
•    Exchange of NF uniforms and other sport gear, promoting respect and connection between the participating countries.
