Banyoles, an International Benchmark in Triathlon

Located in the heart of the province of Girona, capital of the Pla de l’Estany region, Banyoles is a city deeply connected to nature and sport. Its surroundings, dominated by Lake Banyoles and framed by hills, forests, and paths that link the Pyrenees with the Costa Brava, offer exceptional conditions for outdoor sports. Just twenty minutes from Girona and less than an hour from the beaches of the Costa Brava and the Pyrenees, Banyoles enjoys a strategic geographical location. Its proximity to Girona–Costa Brava Airport and the main transport routes connecting Barcelona and southern France facilitates access for athletes and visitors from across Europe. Banyoles’ connection to triathlon dates back to 1986, when the city hosted the first Triatló de Catalunya at Olympic distance. Since then, 38 editions have been held, making it the longest-running triathlon still active in Catalonia and the second oldest in Spain. This sporting legacy has helped shape a strong local tradition and a community deeply rooted in the practice of triathlon.

Since 2011, and without interruption, the City Council of Banyoles, in collaboration with the European Triathlon Union (ETU) and the Spanish Triathlon Federation (FETRI), has organized annual high-level competitions included in both the national and international calendars. Over the years, the city has hosted prestigious events such as the European Triathlon Cup, the European Youth Championships, and various Spanish and Catalan Championships. Among the most notable milestones, Banyoles hosted a Triathlon and Paratriathlon World Cup in 2019, an event that strengthened its reputation as an international reference point and demonstrated its ability to successfully stage competitions of the highest technical and sporting standards — a trajectory that will culminate with the European Multisport Championships in 2026.

These competitions represent a major organizational challenge and mobilize hundreds of volunteers, associations, and institutions whose commitment ensures the success of every edition. The sporting events not only strengthen the local community and the activities of the Club Natació Banyoles, a historic institution and driving force of triathlon in the city, but also generate a positive economic impact on local commerce and services.

It is worth highlighting the strong involvement of the local population and, in particular, the hundreds of volunteers whose dedication and enthusiasm make it possible for Banyoles to remain a model of excellence in the management and organization of international sporting events. The City Council’s firm commitment to promoting sport, combined with the active participation of its citizens, has consolidated Banyoles’ status as a true European capital of triathlon.
