World Triathlon

World Triathlon is pleased to announce that the process to nominate new Athletes Committee representatives is now open, and nominations can be sent until October 7, 2021. Candidates may be any athlete over 18 years of age who has had points on the World Triathlon Rankings or World Triathlon Para Rankings during the past four years.

The role of athletes in the decision-making process of World Triathlon has been a fundamental principle of our organisation since its creation in Avignon, France, 1989.  The inclusion of two members of the Athletes’ Committee on the World Triathlon Executive Board has strengthened the role of the athletes and is an integral part of our continued success as an International Federation striving to be ‘athlete centered’.

In 2012, the constitution of World Triathlon was amended.  This included a modification to the make-up of the Athletes’ Committee to include Paratriathletes.

According to the current constitution, the Athletes Committee is composed of five athletes of each gender, at least one member shall come from each of the five continents, two members shall be Paratriathletes with one from each gender and eight shall be elite athletes with four from each gender. Candidates must be appointed by their own National Federation.

National Federations have until October 7, 2021 at midnight to nominate candidates for the positions. On October 8, nominations will be published on the World Triathlon website.

The online voting will take place from October 11 to November 2, 2021 and the voting will be anonymous and secure to ensure only to vote one by every eligible elite and para athletes. Candidates with the most votes will be elected until all positions are covered, with an exception when the quota for Para triathletes and the regional and gender requirements are not covered. In these cases, the elected candidate will be the one with the most votes, who fulfil the requirements.

In case of a tie with the candidates with the least number of votes in a round where the number of candidates is in excess of the number of available positions, a second round of voting shall take place only between those tied.

The results of the elections for the Athletes’ Committee will be announced via a news release on triathlon.org on November 4, 2021. The chair and the vice-chair will be elected by the newly elected Athletes’ Committee.

The roles and responsibilities of the Athlete’s Committee include:
- Elect the chair and vice-chair who are the representatives of the World Triathlon Athletes’ Committee on the World Triathlon Executive Board with voting right.
- Empower Athlete Representation in World Triathlon decision-making processes.
- Support Athlete Development in their sporting and non-sporting careers.
- Promote Athlete Involvement in decision-making across World Triathlon.
- Ensure Athlete Representation in World Triathlon decision-making
