Brits sweep U23 European champs

It was a banner day for Great Britain at the ETU European U23 triathlon Championships in Kuopio, Finland as Rosie Clarke and Ritchie Nicholls won gold.

In the women’s field, a group of five women that included Clarke, Camille Cierpik of France, and Margit Vanek of Hungary, broke away in the second turn to establish a lead which allowed them to start the bike course up 45 seconds on the field.  The lead pack worked well together on the bike and extended their lead to more than two minutes going into the second transition.  Clarke cruised to the finish line winning by more than 30 seconds.  Hungarian Renata Koch overcame a substantial deficit after the swim and posted the fast run time of the day to win silver.  Cierpik came through for the bronze.

The men’s field was impressive with Alexander Brukhankov wearing number one.  The young Russian has been spectacular in his rookie campaign on the ITU world cup circuit, making the podium in Richards Bay and Edmonton.  He tried to dominate the race from the very beginning choosing the start position at the extreme right of the pontoon, and with his teammate Polyansky occupying the second position. Right after the start, the two Russians set a brisk pace trying to distance themselves from the field.  Francesco Godoy of Spain joined them and out of the first transition the trio tried to build on their lead but weren’t successful.  They were caught in the first of the six bike laps. This group was fast with great battles inside.  But the athletes coming from behind were even faster and grew with every lap.  By the third lap, the pack expanded to 30 and in the fifth there were 50 but their pace never slowed.

After the spectacular transition the top runners took the lead, and Brukhankov again took the lead and maintained this position for the first six kilometers.  But Nicholls never allowed the Russian to get ahead by more than 15 seconds.  Nicholls soon accelerated and passed the Russian who couldn’t respond.  The young Brit stole the race from Brukhankov by ten second.  Charles Rusterholz of Switzerland rounded out the podium taking bronze.

More than 200 athletes coming from 26 different European nations competed in the event.  After some grey and cold days, the sun came out for the event and but it wasn’t enough to warm the water higher than 16.8 degrees, making it a chilly swim for the athletes.  Kuopio is a friendly city rounded by a huge lake, which holds the ice-marathon.
